Elmer’s Pet Rabbit (1941)
Elmer’s Pet Rabbit Review
Elmer’s Pet Rabbit is a 1941 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is far from great.
Elmer goes to a pet shop and buys a rabbit. He brings him home, but the rabbit starts tormenting him expectedly. Now, I did like that lights line repeated, I also loved Elmer and his singing which was so cute and Bugs did really have a couple of outstanding moments here, both in dialogue and in action.
However, this is one of the weakest Bugs Bunny entries because it isn’t as hilarious as you’d expect from the rabbit. He is good, but not great. The design still needs some work and of course the voice here is very different. It is deeper than usual and he is too brutish and sounding too harsh for Bugs who should have a higher voice.
This is a solid short which has its moments, but for a Bugs Bunny cartoon, Elmer’s Pet Rabbit certainly is disappointing.
