Elite Season 5 Review
The fifth season of Elite is slightly inferior to the previous seasons, but it’s for the most part another fun, solid season of this trashy soap opera that is difficult not to enjoy tremendously.

Most of the characters are back here, but the show now primarily focuses on the Commerford family that was introduced in the fourth season. Admittedly, I did miss Guzman, Nadia and especially Lu, but this is the fifth season, so it’s expected that the series will move onto other characters, so I find most of the criticism from fans and critics centering on that issue unfair.
The mystery here is much weaker than in all the previous seasons. It builds upon the conclusion of the previous season, but it felt a bit convoluted and implausible. I could not buy Benjamin suddenly becoming a villain basically. His tutor-mentor relationship with Samuel was initially great, but it was ruined later down the line. Killing off such a major character in such a messy way was definitely problematic, but it was also unexpected and it gave a lot of drama and darkness to that finale.
Rebe and Mencia here continue their on and off relationship. They are very cute together and the show understands that they will undoubtedly get back together as their chemistry is so strong. Rebe continues to be a force to be reckoned with as the actress is so good and the character is unique and very interesting to follow around.

Cayetana got a decidedly less juicy storyline this season, which was fine with me as she’d been through a lot, so it was a nice change in pace for her. The whole sexual harassment drama with Phillipe was not that interesting and the eventual introduction of a rape storyline was too brisk, but it did make an impact. I actually really liked the Isadora character. They obviously conveniently checked two thematic boxes with her – rape and substance abuse – but it was still a very sad storyline.
Omar was sidelined here to a ridiculous degree and the whole subplot with the immigrant that he tries to help in the first half of the season is totally disposed of in the latter half. Ander is also missing in this season, which was odd, but I guess that no more storylines would be possible with these two anyway.
The core of Elite’s fifth season lies in Patrick’s story. He has become by now a true protagonist for better and for worse and the show heavily leans on gay drama now. A Portuguese family of soccer players, a father and his son, are the new additions here. Basically, Patrick pines for both of these men and the result was a silly, but undeniably juicy and fun watch.

Cruz is very likable while Ivan and Patrick are both overly narcissistic with the latter being too annoying and unlikable. The show failing to acknowledge that was problematic. Sometimes the series does not properly address the issues of the characters and their immoral behavior, which is troublesome for sure. But still, it’s a show that is meant to be fun first and foremost and this love triangle was suitably very provocative and highly entertaining to follow. The depiction of bisexuality was also solid here. Their dynamic was not only very sensual, but the show has now become highly graphic in its sex scenes, which made it even more edgy.
The fifth season of Elite is not as good as the previous seasons. The main murder mystery was much less interesting this time around and some characters got the short stick here. With that being said, it’s still a wildly entertaining soap opera with strong acting, memorable personalities and some solid new additions. The Patrick-Ivan storyline was the best one here.
