Early to Bet is a 1951 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is an odd cartoon.
This cartoon gives us the first and only appearance of the Gambling Bug. Basically, thus big gives a gambling fever to his victims, and in this short the cat is the victim. I liked that beginning which introduced us to this character rather amusingly. And the film is really well animated and charming in designs.
But the rest of the short is rather uninspired, repetitive in its nature and the action is rather weak. None of it was as memorable as that opening was. It was stale, and also quite odd as this character never again appeared, and I don’t understand why when they clearly intended him for more films.
Early to Bet starts off good and it looks great, but it quickly becomes uninteresting and repetitive.
