Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century is a 1953 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is an iconic short.
Space hero Daffy battles Marvin the Martian for control of Planet X. This space movie is epic, in fact, it’s the most epic Warner Bros. cartoon probably of them all. But thankfully, it still retains its goofiness. The plot is very well crafted and the animation is absolutely splendid with gorgeous imagery and terrific designs.
Daffy is absolutely hilarious here. He continues to be my favorite Warner Bros. character and this is where you can see him at some of his best. His lisping is very funny and this new superhero persona was perfect for him. Porky Pig is okay, but underutilized and not particularly well cast in my opinion. Marvin the Martian is per usual very cool and fun. I found the action not amazing, but still mostly excellent with the best moments being in the ending. That last shot is iconic as is the movie’s opening with the travel scenes easily being the wittiest bits here.
Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century is a classic film filled with iconic imagery, fantastic humor and gorgeous animation.
