Double Chaser (1942)
Double Chaser Review
Double Chaser is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty solid movie.
This is your regular dog chases cat, cat chases mouse cartoon with a few differences here and there. First, the negatives. The animation is actually rather weak this time around as the colors aren’t smooth or polished at all. The score is weak too with the sound effects only being pretty good. I also found the entire first half very slow in pacing and uninteresting.
But, in terms of the positives, the entire second half clearly stands out as the better one. I really liked the characters as both the dog and the cat are quite memorable with the mouse being the most amusing one. A couple of gags here worked wonders for me with the highlight being that bomb apple ending which is hilarious and so original.
Double Chaser is weaker in the first half, but stronger in the second half with solid characterization and a particularly effective finale.
