Dog Tired (1942)
Dog Tired Review
Dog Tired is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very typical, but solid flick.
This short stars Two Curious Puppies and although most of the duo’s shorts are incredibly padded and slow, this one is actually quite the opposite as the pacing is very brisk and the action is overwhelming leading to a different and mostly successful experiment. It is still your typical spot-gag cartoon in a way as it follows the antics of different animals in the zoo and most gags are uninspired and the film is rarely really funny.
However, there are a couple of gems here in terms of the scenes and characters. I would say that the puppies themselves are quite solid and amusing, that kangaroo is well used and of course the hyena laughing is quite funny and appropriate. But the best scene is easily the parrot seducing his mate. It features sweet talk and then yelling at the dog who watches them. That was very funny and the voice itself is excellent.
Dog Tired is your typical zoo Merry Melodies cartoon that is rarely truly funny, but some scenes do work and some animals definitely leave a solid impression.
