Dog, Cat and Canary (1944)
Dog, Cat and Canary Review
Dog, Cat and Canary is a 1944 animated short film from the Screen Gems series. It is quite a weak cartoon.
This short follows, as the title clearly states, a dog, cat and canary chasing each other. But it has no strength of either Looney Tunes or especially Tom & Jerry series. It is mindless action after action scene with no real inventive moments to be found anywhere.
I liked the animation and the character designs, and I also liked its score quite a bit. The film is technically well executed, but the plot, the chases and everything felt subpar and standard that it never took off properly. The characters are all silent too which led to a lack of dialogue.
Dog, Cat and Canary is well made, but overall too standard to have deserved its Oscar nomination.
