Doctor Who Series 11 Review

The eleventh season of Doctor Who is one of the weakest of the newer seasons as it’s so bland on every level.

Before going episode by episode route, let’s first state the obvious. I am actually in favor of the Doctor being a woman if it’s done right and unfortunately here it wasn’t done right as the Doctor was too sidelined and overly underdeveloped which was a problem for me.

However, Jodie Whittaker herself is great, there’s no denying that. She fits the role so well and is the Doctor in her mannerisms, excellent humor, charisma and even weirdness. It’s a great combination that really works and it’s thus such a shame that we get to spend more time with the other characters than with her as all of her new companions are so uninspired and forgettable.

The Woman Who Fell to Earth is actually one of the best episodes of this season as it’s a solid first outing for the season and a fine introduction to our new Doctor and her companions. She’s very memorable here, but the plot is just passable.

The Ghost Monument is solid, but overly action-oriented. The premise is good though. Rosa is pretty good, but overly political and a great example of how overly politicized this season unfortunately is and lacking a sense of fun and excitement. But this episode does serve as a solid historical lesson.

Arachnids in the UK is overly bombastic and a typical creature horror that benefits from some moving scenes here and there. The Tsuranga Conundrum is rather forgettable overall whereas Demons of the Punjab is another very political, boring historical lesson which this time lacks the dramatic power that Rosa itself had.

Kerblam! is again way too serious and dull for its own sake. The Witchfinders is one of the better episodes with a solid premise, but the second half is much weaker than the first. It Takes You Away is rather forgettable whereas The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos is simply not particularly effective as a finale and it needed a better crafted storyline.

In the end, I liked some episodes here, but most were rather uninspired and this series wasted the Doctor despite a great performance from Jodie Whittaker. It’s a politicized, very dull show now as it lacks excitement and fun.

Worst Episodes: The Tsuranga Conundrum and Kerblam!

Best Episodes: The Woman Who Fell to Earth and Rosa.

My Rating – 3.4
