Difficult People Season 2 Review
The second season of Difficult People is an improvement over the previous one with a more confident approach and better humor.

Unplugged features good Marilyn and such a great, hilarious guest turn from Tina Fey. And of course Billy’s subplot where he dates a rich man features a couple of excellent scenes. This is a great season debut with great humor and excellent character moments for everyone.
Kessler Epstein Foundation is not great and isn’t as funny as the previous episode, but it again features a terrific guest turn in a season full of them. This time around we got Nathan Lane who is so funny here and his death was hilarious.
Italian Pinata is one of this season’s finest episodes. I loved its theme of pretending as Julie pretends that she’s an Italian woman as those women find her so funny and Billy pretends that he was straight until now and has recently come out in order to get a man. Both of them are funny here and both get their well deserved comeuppance in that great finale.
Blade Stallion features a very dull Billy story as I find his brother obnoxious and annoying, but at least Julie is great. Arthur catching her watching porn provided a great premise for this episode which was very well explored afterwards.

Patches is hilarious! Billy staying at Marilyn’s was a lot of fun, but Julie getting a TV gig by pulling an Australian accent and thus getting mistaken for a special needs person was so funny. She was incredibly funny here and I loved her every scene.
36 Candles has a solid Billy part, but I personally thought that Julie’s part went nowhere. She got drunk with her mom and had some fun with her, but it was a missed opportunity for some serious, well needed bonding by now.
Carter isn’t great and is mostly pretty typical and even dull but it has its moments in the theatre and with Matthew. Difficult People never really made a bad episode by now and even these weaker ones are quite solid.
Hashtag Cats is very good and funny. I loved Julie’s part, but the cannibalism part with Billy was hilarious and unexpected. That ending was so funny and it reminded me of South Park in its absurdity.

Cedar Love again features a great ending as the series really does know how to make a great finale for an episode. It was funny and perfect for the episode which featured again weaker and less memorable Julie and more memorable Billy. That was the problem of the entire season.
High Alert is quite good though far from great as it isn’t hilarious. But Matthew’s wedding turning into a funeral was a hilarious, yet obvious development and I loved that it ended on that crazy note, both the season and the episode.
This second season finds Difficult People at more confident and funnier than before. It still has its problems as it rarely manages to have both of its subplots be great, but most episodes here quite good and some are terrific and hilarious. It is really satisfying following these two cynics and their chemistry is infectious.
Worst Episodes: Blade Stallion and 36 Candles.
Best Episodes: Unplugged, Italian Pinata and Patches.
My Rating – 4.1
