Daffy’s Rhapsody Review

Daffy’s Rhapsody Review

Daffy’s Rhapsody is a 2012 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series.

Elmer Fudd attends a musical concert only to find it’s Daffy Duck performing a song about escaping hunters. Elmer is unable to contain himself, donning his hunting gear and chasing the duck as he finishes his song. This movie used the archival footage of Mel Blanc singing the titular song back in the fifties and to a superb effect. The film felt very much timeless in its approach and execution.

The CGI animation is not timeless of course. It’s only serviceable with the faithful character designs and some 3D effects being the highlights. But the action being so well synced with the music itself was terrific, though the movie left a lot to be desired in terms of genuinely funny and/or memorable gags. The stage setting was very well realized. Elmer is great himself, but it is Daffy who stole the show here. In an unusual move by the filmmakers, Daffy is depicted with his original screwball and manic instead of greedy personality. It really worked.

Daffy’s Rhapsody is one of the best modern Looney Tunes cartoons. The music is terrific and the characterization is superb.

My Rating – 4.2
