Cracked Quack (1952)
Cracked Quack Review
Cracked Quack is a 1952 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty funny flick.
Daffy Duck gets inside Porky Pig’s house where he impersonates a stuffed duck just so he can live in a mansion. Apparently, Porky’s got a mansion now, and one cute, persistent dog who watches over him intently. Easily the best parts of the film are the scenes with the dog. Daffy tricking him and making him look stupid was so amusing, but my personal favorite scene is the one with the line “I can’t stand to see a dumb animal suffer” – that was a hilarious line in a perfectly executed scene.
The movie’s ending is a total disappointment. The other ducks come in and have a party. That’s it. It wasn’t anything more sophisticated or more interesting. But the entire remainder of the movie is perfect, the various details which would spring from this situation were so well incorporated, and thus the premise was flawlessly executed. Daffy is so clever here, the dog is endearing and Porky is also very memorable.
Cracked Quack has a very disappointing ending, but other than that misstep, the film is hilarious, perfectly executed and so damn entertaining.
