Canary Row (1950)
Canary Row Review
Canary Row is a 1950 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a good, important short.
First and foremost, let’s talk about its importance. It’s the first ever introduction to Granny and I loved it. She only appears in the second half and thus the first one isn’t as fun, but her every moment is precious, especially the one in the box and of course the ending is very funny. She’s a great character, so well designed and acted while being a great new foe for Sylvester.
Yes, the poor guy now has to deal with her while trying to get to Tweety, and here his suffering is very entertaining. I also of course loved Tweety with his signature cute talking. The short isn’t as interesting at first, but later on it becomes very engaging. The animation is particularly polished this time around, and I loved its high buildings which were so well utilized into the action.
Canary Row is polished and well executed, but the most important for introducing us to Granny in a very entertaining fashion.
