Broad City Season 5 Review
The fifth season of Broad City is a wonderful conclusion to the series which is more dramatic than comedic, but it still worked out very well for itself.

Stories is a forgettable beginning of this season which has its moments, but it’s overall just a string of their misadventures with nothing more to it than that. SheWork and S… Bucket is also a solid, but rocky episode which benefits from hilarious Ilana being, well, Ilana. But otherwise this was a weaker start for this season.
Bitcoin & the Missing Girl is the first very good episode where both Ilana and Abbi get into very entertaining shenanigans in their amusing separated subplots. Make the Space actually makes very strong use of Jaime whose role here is very serious and his boyfriend is great. The two have a terrific relationship that should have been used more in this season.
Artsy Fartsy is where the season suddenly became very serious and it would remain like that throughout the remainder of its run. Ilana had a truly mature, wonderful talk with Lincoln here about the prospects of their open relationship whereas Abbi entered her first lesbian relationship. Lost and Found is fun in its Holocaust survivor comedic subplot, but it’s also very important in Ilana’s reactions to Abbi having a girlfriend. That was an interesting development.
In Shenanigans Lesley leaves Abbi, telling her that she is not an adult, which also is important for Abbi’s later decision to leave NYC whereas Ilana’s hair modeling thing produced a couple of fun lines here. Sleep No More sees the two confront each other and have a major fight when Abbi tells Ilana that she is moving to Boulder, Colorado. That arguing sequence was so powerful and consequential.
Along Came Molly is the final episode where the two just hung around in New York and enjoyed themselves throughout many shenanigans and misadventures, but again their adventures in the previous seasons were so much better and funnier.

Broad City is the name of the finale episode of this titular show and it’s one of the greatest episodes of the entire show. Everything here worked, that last sequence where they showcased some other burgeoning friendships in the city was simply perfect and their various goodbyes were simply heartbreaking to the point that I almost cried.
Yes, this season certainly sacrificed its comedic elements for the dramatic ones, but in that latter department it worked splendidly. It’s a different and refreshing season for the show, the one which saw genuine progress for its heroines and which ended on a truly heartbreaking, impressively emotional manner. I am sad to see these gals go and I am surely going to miss the hack out of their crazy shenanigans.
Worst Episodes: Stories and Along Came Molly.
Best Episodes: Sleep No More and Broad City.
