Bird Karma (2018)
Bird Karma Review
Bird Karma is a 2018 animated short film from DreamWorks Animation. It’s such a traditional, wonderful flick.
It follows a big bird who comes upon a small lake of water and catches and eats fish there ferociously. But when one golden, beautiful fish arrives, he chases it longer until finally catching it and eating it. He becomes sick and dies whereupon all the other fish come to eat his corpse. This is a very good morality tale in the form of a fairy tale that works because it’s just so pleasingly old-fashioned.
I wanted more complexity to it and a longer runtime, but undoubtedly its darker edge and very dark turn at the end just when I thought they were going to befriend each other made this movie a memorable one. It could have been sugar-coated, but thankfully it wasn’t and that more realistic angle led to a much better, much more impressive film from DreamWorks Animation no less and it’s a shame that it ultimately wasn’t Oscar-nominated. The score is also great and the animation is absolutely gorgeous to behold.
Bird Karma features a beautiful traditional hand-drawn animation and a tale that goes refreshingly dark near the end leading to a short, but very effective flick.
