Billboard Frolics (1935)
Billboard Frolics Review
Billboard Frolics is a 1935 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a film that is important and also quite solid.
Its importance stems from the first ever use of the theme Merrily We Roll Along which is later going to become an opening staple for the series and I just cannot wait for that to happen. The film is otherwise quite solid actually. Yes, it again isn’t racy enough and is your typical inanimate objects come to life setting, but billboards were solidly put to use and we haven’t seen them alive before.
Billboard Frolics is okay in its first half, but only the beginning is very good and the rest is pretty standard, somewhat slowly moving stuff. But the second half that uses the famous theme and has more action is much more interesting. I liked the cat, but in my opinion the highlight was that chick chasing a caterpillar. That scene had some good gags in it.
Billboard Frolics definitely is typical, but memorable in score and fun in its action.
