Big Game Haunt (1968)
Big Game Haunt Review
Big Game Haunt is a 1968 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is another weak cartoon.
Colonel Rimfire chases Cool Cat into a deserted house. Unfortunately, they are not alone. A ghost tries to befriend the two, but neither of them want to be friends with him because he is a spook. Cool Cat here got his second movie, which ended up being inferior to the original. Once again the influences are very obvious for this cartoon as it shamelessly rips off the atmosphere and tone of the ‘Pink Panther’ series even right down to the character designs.
That ghost guy was actually memorable and very well designed, but the movie did nothing with him when all is said and done with all those gags where he chased the two being unfunny and repetitious. Cool Cat is also not all that memorable here whereas the hunter is the funniest of the three. The animation is mediocre and cheap-looking and the sound and score are also forgettable. The atmosphere worked and the haunted house was well utilized, but the humor was non-existent here.
Big Game Haunt has a solid premise and an interesting-looking ghost character, but the gags aren’t funny, the action is repetitive and the movie just went through the motions.
My Rating – 3.2
