Betty Boop’s Prize Show (1934)
Betty Boop’s Prize Show Review
Betty Boop’s Prize Show is a 1934 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a very good entry in the series.
In a melodrama at the Slumbertown Theatre, Freddie is the sheriff and Betty is a school teacher desired by outlaw Phillip the Fiend. The premise behind this movie is unoriginal. It’s basically a repeat of ‘She Wronged Him Right’ – the plot is framed as a theater production. But still, this concept is so terrific that it is ripe for more movies and this one was again excellent.
I loved the villain in this piece. Phillip is hilariously over-the-top and cartoonish. Fred is a typical hero and he has a great dynamic with Betty. She also got a couple of hilarious lines of dialogue with the accidental marriage affirmation being the funniest moment in the flick. The final third of the movie transcended the rest of it to greater heights as it featured unforgettable action scenes that were wildly cartoony and inventive. The animation is arrestingly detailed and lively here.
