Best and Worst Films from November 2018
Best Films from November 2018:
3. Cam
I watched quite a lot of great new movies such as ‘Private Life’ throughout this month and thus all three movies on this list ended up being new. The first of the bunch is definitely Cam. This is one highly effective, authentically plotted and unique indie flick which actually has a lot to say not just about this industry, but also about the entire internet. It’s just a very sophisticated, underappreciated movie which also has a killer premise and one terrific performance from Madeline Brewer in such a great main role.
2. Searching
Searching is another fantastic indie thriller which is undeniably effective on all fronts. John Cho and Debra Messing are both terrific here and the film deals with the social networks and our internet culture and way of life finally through a lot of meticulous detail. It’s thus a very timely, highly relatable movie that also has a killer premise and one outstanding twist near the end. Yes, both of these movies should prove a perfect combo for one night or two.
1. Border
But nothing could compare me to this masterpiece of filmmaking. The Swedish film Border is undeniably the most purely original film in terms of storytelling in many years and it just might be my favorite film of the entire 2010s decade. The performances are impressive, the characterization is amazing, the tonal shifts are superbly conveyed and the message is beautiful as is the emotional resonance. This is truly the most unpredictable, authentic movie that I’ve seen in quite some time and it could end up in the list of my favorite movies of all time. I do realize that I have witnessed something special here and I am so happy because of that.
Worst Films from November 2018:
3. The Nun
On the other side of the spectrum we’ve got this ‘Conjuring 2’ spin-off. The Nun is actually not a bad movie as it’s well shot, atmospheric and mostly well acted, but Demian Bichir is so mediocre in his role, the film is lazily written and for a movie called The Nun, we never got to see her kick ass here. She is underused and the entire movie is frustratingly not scary at all.
2. Crazy Rich Asians
But this movie is even worse. Crazy Rich Asians is one of the most frustratingly overrated movies of the year which got good reviews just because of the SJW politics that is prevailing Hollywood nowadays. The film itself is actually one giant mediocrity with walking stereotypes for its characters, a highly cliched and predictable plot and an annoying overemphasis on wealth.
1. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
The worst movie, though, is Halloween 4. Yes, it had some potential for sure as it was less bloody and more traditional in approach, but it’s just a rehash of the original film which was so much better. This is lazy, dull filmmaking at display here with almost none of the scenes being even remotely memorable, leading to the worst sequel in the franchise up to that point.
