Best Films from May 2020:

3. Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas ended up taking the third sport for this month. It’s one of the most underappreciated films of the decade as it was harshly judged by the critics, but the storylines are so epic and mostly very well interwoven together into its impressively ambitious narrative. Some of it is messy, but mostly the film is very epic, highly memorable and just beautiful in its many themes and messages about humanity and good and evil. It deserves more recognition and reevaluation for sure.

2. Tape

Underrated is the name of the game when it comes to this month as Tape also deserves much more attention than it received. This Richard Linklater gem is one of his best films thanks to fantastic dialogue, a killer script and phenomenal performances across the board. It deals with a very difficult subject matter intriguingly so. Yet, it’s stagey, but undeniably juicy and fun through and through.

1. Angel’s Egg

And the number one has to go to this artistic marvel of a film. Yes, Angel’s Egg is one of the most profound anime films that I have ever seen, and also one of the most underappreciated. Work of art springs to your mind throughout this epic journey of faith and religion, striking imagery and epic world building. Its dark atmosphere is also very memorable as is the score. It’s the kind of mysterious, fascinatingly ambiguous film that still has a lot to say about faith if you read upon it correctly, but above all else, the audio-visuals are spectacular and the film’s so imaginative and beautiful.

3. The Handmaiden

I really did not care for this South Korean film. And I rarely do care about this country’s output unfortunately. This is yet another overrated film from them that is definitely technically stupendous, very annoying in its characters and just meant to titillate its viewers with sex scenes without ever meaning anything thematically or emotionally speaking.

2. Jurassic Park III

Jurassic Park III is the weakest entry in the franchise. It has some quite fun action and Sam Neill saves the whole thing as the only recognizable face from the original, but it tries to emulate the original in many rehashed scenes, the action is overwhelming and the storyline itself felt overly forced.

1. Hook

Yes, clearly the theme for this worst list this time around is Spielberg. I had heard about Hook being great so many times before finally deciding to check it out myself. And it was so bad. The sets are great, but not much else in this very cheesy, dated and just plain insufferable movie in characters, plot and action as a whole. It’s an utter mess that only the blindly nostalgic can truly love.
