Best Films from March 2025:

3. One of Them Days

One of Them Days is a big studio Hollywood comedy and those are such a rare breed these days. The familiar plot aside, this is a stellar comedy flick that made me laugh on a consistent basis. The main buddy comedy dynamic between Keke Palmer and SZA is genuinely terrific and you root for them to succeed, which is why the happy ending really clicked in this instance. It’s a flawed movie that doesn’t always work, but when it does, it’s a blast to watch.

2. Presence

Steven Soderbergh should be praised for experimenting with different formats and approaches to storytelling at a late stage in his career and Presence is one of his best recent efforts for sure. This supernatural thriller is filmed in first person and from the ghost’s POV, which made the movie instantly intriguing and fascinating. The ending is polarizing, but undeniably memorable. The film isn’t scary and it’s very slow in its pace, but the dialogue, characterization and overall plot are surprisingly strong for this type of movie.

1. I’m Still Here

And the best movie I saw all month is this Brazilian gem that was my second favorite film of 2024. Fernanda Torres delivered a phenomenally rich and nuanced turn in the main role of Eunice Paiva and what a role this is. The film’s first half is filled with such warm and positive vibes that are perfectly contrasted with the eventual grief and turmoil that would define the second half. Beautifully directed and wonderfully written, the movie also features a genuinely touching ending that made me tear up. It’s the type of movie that only the most cynical people could not love.

Worst Films from March 2025:

3. Pepi, Luci, Bom

Pepi, Luci, Bom was the debut feature for Pedro Almodovar and it shows – this is by far his least accomplished movie technically speaking. It looks and sounds so bad that it can barely be considered a professional film, though admittedly there is some charm to be found in its rough edges. This film has no story to speak of as it was just an excuse for the director to indulge in wild sexual scenarios, fetishes and unhinged behavior.

2. The Counselor

The Counselor is one of the weakest Ridley Scott films. It has a tremendous cast of celebrities, but they were all wasted on inferior roles not worthy of their talents. The movie is well made from a technical standpoint, but it’s overlong, badly paced and terribly written with frustrating dialogue and an overly intricate, but uninvolving and at times even preposterous plot.

1. Saving Bikini Bottom

Saving Bikini Bottom is easily the worst SpongeBob movie released so far. The mixing of live-action and animation was horrendous and the entire film was a sore to the eyes. The movie was supposed to be all about Sandy, but we did not learn anything new about her as too much emphasis was devoted to the uninteresting new characters, including Wanda Sykes. What they did to her here was unforgivable. It’s a poorly conceived mess of a movie.
