Best and Worst Films from March 2020
Best Films from March 2020:
3. Onward
This wasn’t the best month for me, but still I saw a couple of terrific movies with one of the best being Onward, a movie that I thankfully saw in theaters before they got closed due to the upcoming pandemic. This is Pixar’s best movie in recent memory, a glorious return to form, and a highly underrated flick that most unfortunately do not realize how strong it is. It’s psychologically impressive and complex, the main duo ranks among the company’s best characters and the humor has never been better in a Pixar movie. It’s a high fantasy that really works.
2. Best in Show
Best in Show is one of the best comedies that I have seen so far, and certainly the quintessential example of a successful mockumentary feature. This flick truly gets how crazy dog owners can be, and the plethora of colorful characters here is impressive. The performances are strong from its amazing cast and the humor is amazing with many instantly memorable lines of dialogue.
1. Innocence Unprotected
Innocence Unprotected (Nevinost bez zastite) clearly is one of the best Serbian films of all time, at least it is in my opinion. Makavejev here created such an authentic, wildly creative movie that mixes the documentary format with the comedic and historical approaches, and then what we have here is a movie that flies by how fun it is, a film that paints its time period so well and that it depicts just how important it is to respect your own country’s cinematic output and history. The humor is also excellent here while the editing is simply brilliant.
Worst Films from March 2020:
3. Spies in Disguise
Though I found some of its humor terrific, Spies in Disguise is a letdown at the end of the day. It does benefit from strong performances by the main actors, but the action is overwhelming and most of its plot is bland and very unoriginal.
2. In Old Chicago
In Old Chicago has some pretty good performances, some solid family drama and a memorable third act. It looks good, but it’s very poorly assembled and awkwardly filled with musical numbers. It’s a mess of a film that was pretty much a rip-off of better ‘San Francisco’.
1. Emma
Emma is such a giant mediocrity. I am not a fan of Jane Austen, and this is a further proof of my indifference toward her work. This movie looks terrific for sure, but the plot is terrible and simplistic while the main character is horrible and annoying.
