Best and Worst Films from February 2018
Best Films from February 2018:
3. Billy Elliot
This shortest month was good for me as ‘The Shape of Water’ and ‘The Florida Project’ came very close to being on this list, but in the end Billy Elliot came on top. This British charmer features terrific performances from its talented actors who play such endearing characters for whom you end up caring for. It has a very moving, powerful story that is inspirational without being clichéd. What a lovely flick.
2. Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte
This list couldn’t have possibly gone without this amazing horror thriller. Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland excelled at playing very different roles than usual for them and thus showed us all how immensely talented they are. Two iconic actresses. But the film is also beautifully shot and it kept me constantly on the edge of my seat owing to its creepy atmosphere and a high amount of simply unforgettable, frightening sequences.
1. Three Billboards
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the best film of 2017 and thus my number one pick for February as well. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell killed it in two amazing, deservedly acclaimed performances. This film is not only a sophisticated and very interesting crime drama, but also a funny, very well scripted black comedy with powerful dialogue and some interesting twists and turns. It explores its interesting, important themes so well while giving us many moving scenes as well as fully fleshed out characters. A future classic.
Worst Films from February 2018:
3. Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad is not a bad movie and it is actually the only passable, okay film on my worst list for this month. It features an excellent performance from Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn and it is mostly a fun, funny movie. The movie, however, is a very disappointing superhero flick which should have been great and inventive but ended up being clichéd and with a particularly bombastic, mediocre third act.
2. Darkest Hour
Darkest Hour is a shameless Oscar bait which is well acted and well made with some pretty good scenes, but for the most part it’s a frustrating experience. It is not only incredibly boring and insufferably dull to sit through, but also predictable and extremely typical from start to finish with a beat by beat narrative and approach to it. It was just made to get its actor an Oscar as otherwise it is a mediocre affair.
1. The Room
The Room is a horrible movie and that’s objectively speaking. Not only is the cinematography terrible and the script abysmal with no point to its story and especially some scenes whatsoever, but it features laughable dialogue and probably the single worst performance ever by an actor in hilariously campy, awful and incredibly entertaining turn from Tommy Wiseau. In the end, The Room most certainly is an awful cinematic achievement, but I do not hate it as it is such an entertaining, difficult to hate and hilarious film.
