Best and Worst Films from August 2022
Best Films from August 2022:
3. Deliverance
My annual anniversary marathon during August where I watch a film per year from the 1910s to today wasn’t as strong as I would have hoped. ‘Foolish Wives’ could have landed here as well, but I ultimately went with Deliverance for this third spot as it’s a very thought-provoking, unforgettable film in its interesting themes and iconic graphic violence.
2. The Song of Bernadette
The Song of Bernadette took me by surprise how emotionally engaging and thematically rich it is. It’s a sophisticated adaptation that features excellent performances, amazing technical aspects and stupendous dialogue throughout. It’s a multiple Oscar nominee that deserves more love nowadays as it’s quite underrated.
1. The Ox-Bow Incident
The Ox-Bow Incident is one of the best westerns that I’ve seen personally. It elevates the genre due to its added exploration of mob mentality and how dangerous it can be. It also looks and sounds great, the performances are strong and the directing is phenomenal. It’s a rare flick that is short, but very effective, especially in its dialogue and thematic resonance.
Worst Films from August 2022:
3. Minions: The Rise of Gru
The second Minions movie ended up the same as the original. I found some moments here wildly entertaining and amusing, but most of the movie was devoted to an uninteresting spy storyline and forgettable, childish gags. It’s a franchise that has become stale and repetitive by this point.
2. Luck
Luck has a great cat sidekick and superb animation. The world building is also interesting, but still not as expansive as it could and should have been. It’s a film that is too simplistic and too forgettable for what it’s trying to do. It’s passable, but far from good.
1. Elvis
And by far the worst movie I saw all month was Elvis. This is one of the most overrated movies of the year that just doesn’t work. Not only is Tom Hanks’ performance horrendous, but his character overtook the story from Elvis himself and it was supposed to be his movie. It’s a film that is way too chaotic for its own sake as Baz Luhrmann really failed this time around.
