Best and Worst Films from August 2020
Best Films from August 2020:
3. Swallow
Swallow is easily the best new movie that I watched during this month. 2020 is going to be remembered for being rather weak in terms of cinema for obvious pandemic reasons, but it has its fair share of good flicks with this one being one of the prime examples of that. This thriller is uncomfortable to watch, but it treats the pica disorder and its protagonist still with a lot of empathy and care. The main performance from Haley Bennett is so amazing that it should make her a household name in Hollywood as soon as possible.
2. Born Yesterday
Due to excellent acting performances across the board and a killer script, Born Yesterday is an undeniable romantic comedy classic that still continues to charm after all this time. I hugely respected its message about the importance of knowledge and self-respect in interpersonal relationships. The dialogue is brisk and very amusing. Above all else, it is to be appreciated for the amazing turn in the main role from Judy Holliday who actually entirely deserved her Oscar for her superb work here.
1. The Boys in the Band
The Boys in the Band is a movie that took me by surprise. I expected a dated mess of a movie judging by the reviews, but I was in for a surprise as it’s anything but dated. It’s actually a great time capsule that depicts honestly the gay lives of this time period with its depressing tone being suitable for this particular story. The performances are uniformly amazing, the characterization is fantastic and the dialogue is truly outstanding. It’s a highly entertaining film that is also very sophisticated throughout. It’s a rare five-star movie for me.
Worst Films from August 2020:
3. The Blues Brothers
The third worst film I saw in August has to be this musical comedy that has gained a cult status, but to me it’s only strong in its soundtrack, but otherwise it’s very silly, overly stupid in many of its scenarios and overly frenetic as it has way too many action sequences.
2. Possessor
This film got some great reviews, but I found it incredibly unappealing. The main actor and the character are annoying and the plot, though solid at surface, was only used for thriller purposes instead of genuine science fiction ideas.
1. Tesla
I really disliked Tesla. I found the casting of Ethan Hawke horrendous on many levels while the movie itself is also ridiculous, especially in that horrendous end scene featuring a musical number no less. It doesn’t explore his personality nor does it explore his achievements all that well. It’s just bad.
