Beauty and the Beast (1934)
Beauty and the Beast Review
Beauty and the Beast is a 1934 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a ridiculously rehashed entry.
I just do not understand what they were thinking here. This is basically a rehash of Silly Symphonies and it was just baffling to witness a Silly Symphony with a Merry Melodies title. That is literally what happened here. You have singing and dancing, you have a girl imagining scary things until waking up in the end. This premise had been seen countless times before in the aforementioned series and it just doesn’t work here.
The film is far from bad as it is a harmless and cute little film with some pretty solid animation being the second color entry in the series, but there is none of the trademark gags or music from the series present here and that lack of identity was beyond troublesome. I also would have liked to have seen more of the titular fairy tale in it, but alas I did not get it.
Beauty and the Beast is a Merry Melody that is basically a Silly Symphony which was a troublesome and ultimately a very bad choice.
