Barry Season 1 Review
Barry is a black comedy crime drama series starring Bill Hader. The first season premiered in 2018 on HBO. It’s a very overrated show.

It follows a hitman who unexpectedly joins an acting class and then he must balance his newfound life of normalcy with his criminal life. The first season has eight episodes of around thirty minutes in length. None of these episodes are particularly strong and I found this show immensely overrated and disappointing. It’s simply not my cup of tea.
When you hear the name Bill Hader and you hear the term comedy being used when describing this series, you expect a hilarious comedy, but what you end up with is basically a crime drama with very mild and sporadic comedic touches that simply weren’t enough to make me care for this show as a big fan of comedy shows and as somebody who dislikes crime dramas strongly.
The humor that was here was only solid and at times clever, but mostly very scarce. The drama that the show deals with is basically a Batman-inspired duality conflict arc that has a criminal element added for originality’s sake and that’s pretty much it.
I love Bill Hader. I have always enjoyed his performances and I find him to be quite talented and very funny. But although he did excel at playing both sides to this tumultuous character, the show evidently misuses him and especially his comedic acting chops, resulting in a huge disappointment for me as his fan. Others fare even worse as you have the typical clueless girlfriend character, the standard black female detective and the goofy and over-the-top hitman characters who are more annoying than fun.

Overall, Barry is not for me. While I did appreciate its authenticity as it’s not like any other show out there, the emphasis on crime drama instead of black comedy bothered me as I prefer the latter instead of the former. Bill Hader is excellent in the main role, but I wished to have seen more of the comedic side of him. The other characters fare much worse and most of the episodes are overly straightforward and predictable in plot progression. It’s a show that is tonally confusing and plain annoying to watch, so I will not be returning for future seasons for sure.
Worst Episodes: Chapter One: Make Your Mark and Chapter Seven: Loud, Fast, and Keep Going.
Best Episodes: Chapter Five: Do Your Job and Chapter Six: Listen With Your Ears, React With Your Face.
