Backwoods Bunny (1959)
Backwoods Bunny Review
Backwoods Bunny is a 1959 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty memorable short.
Bugs Bunny takes a vacation in Arkansas, but he is pursued by two famished buzzards. This movie introduced two new characters into the series – Elvis and Pappy. They are actually excellent. They are these very funny stereotypical Southerners with the son also being incredibly dumb. While the father could have received more screen time, the dynamic between Bugs and Elvis was so entertaining, though of course this was one of the easiest obstacles for the bunny.
The highlight in terms of the set pieces is that final contraption that leads to the son shooting his dad several times. The final song that Bugs sings accompanying those shots was a clever ending as well. His cross-dressing moment was also hilarious and it was interesting how that was the only plan that actually backfired on the redneck as he saw right through it.
Backwoods Bunny is a hugely entertaining, very funny Bugs Bunny short that deftly introduced two new characters in the form of these very amusing buzzards.
