Assault and Peppered is a 1965 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty solid, though inherently flawed cartoon.

Daffy Duck and Speedy Gonzales wage war on each other in this short that once again paired the two for some inexplicable reason or another. These two don’t quite fit together and Daffy was out of character. He wasn’t just a villain, but an initially competent one, which simply felt off. The short is really odd in that characterization.

However, this is still a surprisingly solid cartoon despite all odds. That’s because the action is very strong and some gags are excellent. The cannonball sequence is particularly elaborate and clever. Speedy is so much fun here with some of his lines being very memorable. The dynamic between the two is overall quite solid and playful.

Assault and Peppered is an odd cartoon in some of its characterizations, but the action and gags are surprisingly good nonetheless.
