All This and Rabbit Stew (1941)
All This and Rabbit Stew Review
All This and Rabbit Stew is a 1941 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty solid flick.
Yes, this cartoon is obviously very stereotypical in its portrayal of the black hunter and thus it is now part of the Censored Eleven. But it’s not horrible in my opinion as only his look is obviously caricatured and not much more than that. The character serves well as Bugs’ punching bag where he torments him in his usual clever ways.
Bugs is great here, very amusing and very clever. The cartoon definitely has its pacing problems and I did find its entire first half slow and uneventful, but the second half fixed that with a lot more energy added to the table and a couple of terrifically executed scenes such as the ending dice game scene and the extended, but so well executed log scene. Very good action is present there.
So All This and Rabbit Stew obviously has its pacing and caricaturist problems, but it’s a lot of fun, especially in a couple of superbly executed action scenes.
