Alice Through the Looking Glass Movie Review
Alice Through the Looking Glass is a 2016 fantasy film directed by James Bobin and starring Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska. It’s another mediocre offering from this series.

Alice comes across a magical looking glass that takes her back to Wonderland where she finds that the Mad Hatter is madder than usual and wants to discover the truth about his family. Alice then travels through time and embarks on a race to save the Hatter before time runs out.
Have you ever wondered what was the origin story of the Mad Hatter? Neither have I. Yes, this movie is entirely needless as we never wanted to know about this stuff and certainly none of it matters in the long run. These iconic Lewis Carroll characters should remain mysterious and never be given backstories.
I did like the relationship between White Queen and Red Queen. That was emotional and satisfactory, mostly thanks to two strong performances from Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter. But that’s more than could be said for Johnny Depp who sleepwalked through this movie and delivered what is inarguably one of his worst, most horrible performances.
Alice is likable and well played by Mia Wasikowska. I liked her story, but again the writing from Linda Woolverton here is very bad and aggressively feminist in an obvious way. I approve of what she’s trying to do, but the subtlety is always thrown off the roof when it comes to her recent movies.
Alice Through the Looking Glass is pretty much on par with its predecessor. It was a lesser shock for me personally as I knew what to expect this time around and I accepted that this isn’t my Alice story so I could find it serviceable in some ways, but for the most part it remains a mediocrity.

Sasha Baron Cohen’s Time is undercooked as a character and not as fun as the movie thinks he is. I did, though, really appreciate the film’s fantastical elements thanks to dazzling CGI and great world building. I was also quite invested in the first act when it comes to the story, but when we got to Wonderland, everything went downhill from there. The third act is again a giant mess.
Alice Through the Looking Glass is pretty much on par with its predecessor as another mediocrity which looks great owing to dazzling visuals and it has some very solid and moving parts (Red Queen scenes and the first act are the standouts), but it remains horribly written by being unsubtly and aggressively feminist (courtesy to Linda Woolverton of course) and we not only got a needless Mad Hatter origin story, but the one plagued by Johnny Depp’s lazy, terrible performance that ranks among his absolute worst.
