Affairs of the Art (2021)
Affairs of the Art Review
Affairs of the Art is a 2021 Canadian animated short film directed by Joanna Quinn. It is a very pretentious flick.
Beryl’s back in this film, which showcases one family’s eccentric yet endearing obsessions with everything from drawing to screw threads and pet taxidermy. The only thing that really appealed to me here is the animation. It is fluid, artistic and simply gorgeous. It made watching the movie much more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise. The colorful cast of characters is also initially a plus.
But eventually, they began to annoy me. This is a French-Canadian movie and the French are famous for these strange movies with weird characters and very odd plot scenarios. The movie tries to portray all the eccentricities of this family as something more meaningful, but I personally found it to be only pretentious with no proper thematic resonance. The first act with the animal brutality was also too much for me to bear.
Affairs of the Art is an Oscar-nominated short film that features impressive animation, but is otherwise overly strange and frustrating.
