A Song a Day (1936)
A Song a Day Review
A Song a Day is a 1936 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty solid flick.
At Betty Boop’s Animal Hospital, various species have appropriate ailments. Morale becomes a problem, so Professor Grampy to the rescue. This movie was labeled as a Grampy short, which makes sense as he is after all the most important character in the story. Thankfully, Betty got a more significant role as well. She added animal nurse to her long list of professions in this movie and she was quite endearing.
Those animals mostly had ridiculous cartoony ailments that were quite funny. That first half was the more surreal part of the film that eventually became just a dance routine for all characters. But the music is so catchy and vibrant that I really liked this short despite its shortcomings in terms of storytelling, humor and characterization. It’s energetic and charming.
A Song a Day has a slight plot, but it makes up for it with terrific music and strong animation.
