Ranking Super Bomberman Games
Bomberman is one of my favorite franchises and Super Bomberman remains its most iconic subseries to this day. These action games were released during the nineties on the SNES and all of them are worth playing. For this list, I will be taking into account both the normal and the battle mode when ranking these games and also the technical aspects. Let the ranking begin.
5. Super Bomberman 4
I like all of these games, but one of them has to take the last spot and it has to be the fourth one. Yes, this was clearly the weakest in the franchise due to a couple of things that it did wrong. The multiplayer wasn’t the greatest and it felt stale in comparison to the other entries in the series. The overall level design was only okay. The worst offender was the the possibility to carry more eggs behind you. That made the game way too easy. On the positive side of things, the campaign had its very good worlds and the bosses were surprisingly tough and memorable.
4. Super Bomberman
The first entry in the series gets the fourth spot. The problems here are twofold – this game is not only way too easy, but it’s also ridiculously short. You can beat it fairly easily. It’s a rougher game as most of the gameplay elements would be improved later down the line. With that being said, most of the stages were so well designed and the overall battle mode was excellent in this one. It looks and sounds strong and its gameplay is quite addictive. It set the stage for the rest of the series so well.
3. Super Bomberman 2
Super Bomberman 2 has a lot going for it. Its audio-visuals are pretty good. The level design is quite terrific and some of the levels were genuinely inventive and striking. The highlight is the main campaign that featured particularly well designed stages ad a fun gameplay loop. The problem here is battle mode, which is too forgettable and too easy due to the A.I. being so dumb this time around. It’s an overall improvement upon its predecessor, but due to all if its flaws it simply cannot compete with the above two entries.
2. Super Bomberman 5
Super Bomberman 5 is a delight. This is the second best entry in this subseries. While the single player campaign had its flaws, it was also ambitious and the bosses were great. The highlight is the multiplayer – the A.I. was surprisingly competent, the maps are quite interesting and the new mechanics and power-ups were truly terrific. The addition of basically a possible second life in multiplayer made battling a whole lot of fun. It’s a colorful, wildly entertaining game that was impressive in battle mode, but minus points go to its flawed single player campaign.
1. Super Bomberman 3
And the best entry in the series has to be Super Bomberman 3, which is one of the most fun and creative Bomberman games of all time. Graphically, this was a throwback to the previous games, especially my favorite ‘Mega Bomberman’, which is why it appealed to me quite a bit. The score is also excellent. The battle mode is phenomenal here, featuring stages that are inventive and strikingly memorable. A lot of enjoyment stems from playing the multiplayer in particular as it was so well realized. The main campaign was also pretty good with strong level design and some excellent, demanding bosses. It’s a terrific gaming experience all-around and a deserved pick for number one on this list.
