Cunk on Life Review

Pioneering documentary maker Philomena Cunk returns with her most ambitious quest to date, venturing right up the universe and everything to examine life and existence in an attempt to find out the point of it all. I loved the show ‘Cunk on Earth’, but this special was even better as it benefitted from a shorter runtime that lead to a brisker pace and more on-point interviews. The result is a hugely entertaining hour of television that made me smile and laugh throughout.

Diane Morgan is once again brilliant, showcasing her incredible knack at not only comedic line delivery, but also priceless facial expressions that go from confusion to irritation, but consistently retaining utter boredom that is Cunk’s defining characteristic. She is such an underrated talent and one of the most gifted comedians today.

The crux of this special contains explorations of life, death, religion and science. I loved that it was a critique on not just religion, but science too as emphasized by that clever Bing Bang joke. The special definitely rushes through these subjects, but this led to a more entertaining production. I just wished that we get to see more of her in the near future.

Cunk on Life is at its best when tackling interviews. The reactions from the interviewees are so priceless and at times genuinely iconic in their baffled expressions with the Brian Cox segment being the most memorable and hilarious one. Juxtaposing her idiotic questions with their straight scientific answers was so amusing. And there is also a lot of depth that inadvertently springs from some of her seemingly immature questions, which only further elevated this formula. It never became stale to me, which is a huge compliment to Morgan.

Cunk on Life is another terrific hour of television spent with the one and only Philomena Cunk. Yes, this special felt rushed, but it was also hugely entertaining, genuinely well written and very funny from start to finish. Some of her statements and running gags were hilarious while the comedic highlights were the priceless reactions from the interviewees.
