Saga Vol. 11 Review

Saga Vol. 11 Review

Saga is an epic space opera fantasy comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. The eleventh volume covering issues 61 to 66 was published in 2023.

This volume is concerned with three storylines: Alana’s resolve to improve the fortunes of her family, Gwendolyn’s plan to sway the Robot Kingdom’s allegiances over to Wreath, and Agent Gale being forced by Landfall’s government to finish the mission of eliminating Hazel and the allies associated with her during the course of the series. Unlike the last volume that was the nadir of the series, this one was a return to form, though it still could not compete to the pre-hiatus stuff.

Gwendolyn trying to forge allegiances with the robots was a very interesting storyline that ultimately didn’t go anywhere. Much more could and should have been done with this particular narrative. Alana’s story was better crafted. She is trying to improve the living conditions for her kids and her plight was palpable. Hazel and her robot brother got a great dynamic here and they had to deal with a pretty interesting new character.

The best storyline was Agent Gale tracking down Upsher. This all leads to a confrontation that was quite memorable and climactic. I liked the twist that Upsher is a pacifist guy now and that he is anti-revenge. That was an interesting development for his character that really worked. The same goes for the drift between Alana being for peace and Petrichor wanting revenge. That was an interesting distinction for sure. Petrichor fighting The Will was also quite epic. The illustrations were great here and so was the dialogue, but the comic was too uneven and disorganized.

The eleventh volume of Saga is cluttered with too many different storylines, but at least most of them worked and some were quite climactic. It’s a solid return to form after the last lackluster volume.

My Rating – 4.1
