The Pied Piper of Guadalupe (1961)
The Pied Piper of Guadalupe Review
The Pied Piper of Guadalupe is a 1961 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a terrific short that was nominated for an Oscar.
After being taunted and mocked by the mice in Guadalupe, Sylvester imitates the Pied Piper of Hamelin in an attempt to lure the mice of Mexico, so he can trap them in a jar. But his flute has no effect on Speedy Gonzales, and Speedy decides to rescue all of his friends. While undoubtedly rather straightforward in the second act with no memorable gags to speak of, most of the movie was superbly executed with particularly strong animation.
The visuals here are gorgeous and the colorful aesthetic was just beautiful. What is also fantastic here was the use of both of its iconic characters. Sylvester and Speedy have rarely been better together than they were here as their dynamic was phenomenal. The highlight is that ending as it was very funny and in perfect line with the movie’s premise. It’s a rare great adaptation of this famous story that changes it, but still makes it fun.
I still prefer Paying The Piper (1949) to this, it was a little more original and funny
Interesting. I prefer this one, but Paying the Piper is more clever and original, I agree with that assessment. Thanks for the comment!
