Robin Robin (2021)
Robin Robin Review
Robin Robin is a 2021 animated short film produced by Aardman Animations. It is probably the sweetest cartoon of the year.
A bird raised by mice begins to question where she belongs and sets off on a daring journey of self-discovery. The robin protagonist and her story clearly stand as a metaphor for accepting others and the importance of diverse families. Thus, it’s a familiar message movie, but the strong execution transcends the standard trappings of its plot.
The robin is just so lovable. This is such a cute, endearing creature and her arc is very touching. The mice all function as this wonderful family while the cat was pleasantly old-fashioned in her straightforward villainy. I loved the magpie character and the friendship between those two was great, but the magpie did disappear a bit in the second half of the story. The animation is absolutely gorgeous as is expected of Aardman with the highlight being the creature designs. The whole puppetry look to them was just superb. My favorite part of the movie was the second act with the spirited adventure to get that star while the rest was less memorable.
Robin Robin is a heartwarming, endearing animated tale of self-discovery that is fueled by wonderful characters and superb stop-motion animation.
