Legally Blonde 2 Movie Review

Legally Blonde 2 is a 2003 comedy film directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfield and starring Reese Witherspoon and Sally Field. It’s an inferior, but still fun sequel.

Elle postpones her wedding plans and sets off to Washington D.C. to enable the passing of a bill which bans animal testing. The plot of this movie is literally the same from before. Everything was lifted from the original, including the tone, the character interactions and the overall premise. The only difference is that here Elle doesn’t go to Harvard, but to Washington.

I get that they tried to do homage to ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’, but they failed to do that properly. The movie is so cheesy and overly emotional that it becomes such a tired comedy that shamelessly tugs at the audiences’ heartstrings without that emotion ever being earned.

With that being said, even though the movie is obviously even more unrealistic than the original in its plot, it was still quite entertaining to watch. How can anybody say no to Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods? This is an iconic comedy genre creation and she is fantastic once again. Witherspoon is so magnetic in the role that just her wide smile makes you fall in love with Elle.

I also really liked some of the other supporting characters, though a lot of them were forgettable. Sally Field has a typical arc where she became a better person and I found her being an adversary to Elle not all that exciting. The same goes for Grace. The boyfriend character is rather sidelined here and that entire wedding subplot was uninspired. But Jennifer Coolidge is just as fun as ever and I wish that she got more scenes.

Legally Blonde 2 also features a wonderful dog activism storyline that was obviously overly emotionally manipulative, but it was still in line with the character and it somewhat worked. Bruiser is actually one of the most memorable characters in the movie that is hilariously more fun when the dogs are around than the humans. The directing, pacing, technical aspects and script are all weak, though the costume work is reliably terrific. The humor is solid and the movie can be very funny, but certainly not as funny as the original.

Legally Blonde 2 is pretty much a repeat of the original movie with a similar, albeit even more implausible plot scenario. It’s worth seeing for Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods as she is just as lovable and as funny as she was before, but the other supporting players are inferior and the third act was overly cheesy.

My Rating – 3
