A Sun (2020)

A Sun Movie Review
A Sun is a 2020 Taiwanese crime drama film directed by Chung Mong-hong and starring Chen Yi-wen among others. It’s a movie that wasn’t for me.
A family of four fractures under the weight of unmet expectations, unexpected tragedy, and uncompromising pride. This premise sounds interesting on paper, but the execution to me wasn’t great. Undoubtedly, there are some moments here that work, especially some heartbreaking family fights. The family interactions and complicated relationships worked and the movie has its moving scenes in the second half.

A Sun is a movie that isn’t appealing to me. It’s one of those sprawling family dramas that are epic in length and very boring to watch. For two and a half hours, not much happens as the pace is rather slow, but when stuff happens, it is often implausible or even soapy in quality. The whole movie has that television show vibe to it that I really did not dig.
The characters are fine and the performances are the standouts here as everybody did a magnificent job and each actor elevated his or her material. Again, the family relationships were truly pretty strong, but some plot developments in the second half really got on my nerves, especially the crime stuff as they came out of nowhere and were frustrating to watch. The dramatic elements were much better.
A Sun is shot well, but it’s paced horribly as it really doesn’t hold attention, at least it did not hold my attention. It bored me to death honestly. The best parts of the movie come in the second act as that is the most moving and powerful part, but the first act was an overlong introduction and the third act was simply overly annoying in its crime elements and over-the-top even.
