BoJack Horseman Season 2 Review

The second season of BoJack Horseman is a marked improvement upon its predecessor with better crafted storylines and a bigger emotional punch. This is where the show reached its strong status.

Every day it gets a little easier.

But you gotta do it every day.

That’s the hard part.

But it does get easier

Brand New Couch isn’t the greatest opening episode as it benefits from good dog jokes with Mr. Peanutbutter, but is otherwise unremarkable. Yesterdayland has a pretty unimportant Todd subplot, and that’s the problem with this character in general – his stories rarely are truly important in the bigger scope of things, though the jokes surrounding that fact are usually great. But the BoJack part is excellent as Wanda is a great new love interest character for him, and her coma backstory provided a lot of great nostalgia humor.

Still Broken finds the old cast of Horsin’ Around at Herb’s funeral and the end result is a solid reunion episode, but one which could have ultimately been so much better and funnier. After the Party is at its best with Princess Carolyn having relationship problems with “Vincent”. The fact that she never put the two and two together with these kids is hilarious and so sad.

Chickens has been done before and better with South Park in particular, but it’s still a good enough, hugely entertaining episode that for once gives Todd a chance to shine as he’s the much needed protagonist this time around. Higher Love is at its best with Salinger and the jokes about him, but otherwise it’s not the best episode here, not by a mile.

Hank After Dark has Diane fight sexual misconduct in Hollywoo and it’s thus obviously a very topical subject that is very well, truthfully and darkly explored here. But Let’s Find Out is the first episode where the show reached its true greatness. Having BoJack square off against Daniel Radcliffe was absolutely hilarious, the quiz itself is quite amusing and it resulted in that jaw-dropping finale where he proved just how petty and awful of a human being he actually is.

The Shot is a solid enough transitional episode that is the best when exploring Diane and her helping out in one war-torn country. The show depicts so painfully how those so-called humanitarians are mostly just attention-seeking egomaniacs.

Yes And has Diane crash in at BoJack’s place, and I just appreciate how this season had her reach her lowest in a very believable manner. The same goes for Princess Carolyn whose relationship with an awful, cheating rabbit was painful, but it brought her a beautiful resolution which helped bring her self-esteem to a surface in an inspirational way.

Escape from L.A. is another great, but very cringy episode as it follows BoJack committing one terrible action after another. But because the character has been so well written so far, we’d come to care for him, even if he is so horrible which is a testament to how strong characterization on this show truly is. Out to Sea isn’t the strongest finale, but the friendship between BoJack and Todd is greatly emphasized here.

In the end, the second season of BoJack Horseman has had its bumps along the way, but most of the episodes are either very good or downright great. The show has reached truly great character development by this point, and the drama becomes juicier and juicier.

Worst Episodes: Brand New Couch and Still Broken.

Best Episodes: Let’s Find Out and Escape from L.A.

My Rating – 4
