Best and Worst Films from September 2019
Best Films from September 2019:
3. Paris Is Burning
I have seen a couple of truly terrific movies this month and a couple that are so good such as ‘Midsommar’ and ‘It Chapter Two’, but they were just not great enough for this list. Paris is Burning is a seminal look into the drag and trans ball culture of the eighties and thus it deservedly gets its third spot here. What I loved about it is its influence on future Drag Race and in particular its moving, truly heartbreaking ending. It’s a wonderful film.
2. The Skin I Live In
The Skin I Live In is one of the craziest films I’ve seen in quite a long time, and one of Almodovar’s best. This movie features such an unbelievable twist that made the film iconic and very easily recognizable. It succeeds as a genuinely creepy and disturbing thriller both in concept and in execution. It deals with some very interesting themes such as gender identity in a very provocative manner.
1. Ad Astra
Ad Astra ended up being one of the best films of this year and the best I watched in September. I am so glad I watched it in the theater owing to its terrific special effects, music and amazing cinematography. But the film’s real strength lies in Brad Pitt’s career-best performance and such a clever, nuanced script that explores many fundamentally important themes about humanity and space exploration. It’s a very sophisticated, and emotionally rewarding science fiction drama that deserves to be seen by more people.
Worst Films from September 2019:
3. Annabelle Comes Home
‘Toy Story 4’ almost ended up on this spot how disappointing and overrated that film was, but Annabelle Comes Home is even more disappointing having in mind the strength of its predecessor. Yes, it is genuinely entertaining and also very creepy in that piano scene, but overall it’s so thin in terms of plot, characterization or any explanations that it ended up being just an excuse for endless jump scares.
2. One Night of Love
One Night of Love is not a bad movie by any means as Grace Moore is very good in it and it’s passable overall. But there is no denying its very dated material as it’s an opera musical that is very forgettable and thin in script and characterization. Needless to say, its Best Picture nod was ludicrous.
1. Hot Fuzz
This is a controversial choice for number one, but I really did not like Hot Fuzz. The original is so much better, and the third one is also an improvement upon this very overrated, boring and unappealing buddy cop comedy that was just made to appeal to those who like those films from the eighties. I don’t and to me it was not funny and not entertaining at all.
