Top Ten Glee Characters List

Glee has had a lot of characters throughout its run so I am mostly going to focus on the core group from the first season onward. Although its characters can be stereotypical, most are very well developed and actually very memorable when all is said and done. Here are my picks for Glee’s ten best creations.

10. Sam

I like Sam quite a bit. He really did not get to grow as much as most other characters on this list, but I liked his poverty backstory as well as following his modeling career. He’s good, goofy and kind, but his atrocious relationship with Mercedes ruined his character, and a bit the overall show.

9. Finn

Finn was always an overly good-natured leader typical for a protagonist, but when the actor portraying him died, the show became darker and the eventual homages to the actor and the character were all great and they made the show quite poignant. His relationship with Rachel remains of course the signature one for Glee.

8. Will

The most problematic character in Glee has to be Will Schuester. I actually really liked his first season despite the annoying wife. The dark emphasis on his unfulfilled life and lost big dreams really struck with me and he was quite relatable, but then he became overly obsessed with the Glee Club children to his detriment. He lost his personality very quickly.

7. Tina

One of the most pointless characters at first, Tina became much more than that in the later seasons. They acknowledged her pointless nature by parodying it in some episodes, and I really like all her relationships too. But what I liked about Tina is how terrible of a person she could be and some of her conceited sequences were quite amusing.

6. Rachel

Rachel is basically the protagonist of the series, especially after Cory Monteith died. She can be annoying and overly self-centered and her entire storyline is beyond unrealistic, but it’s the typical dream girl going big story that ultimately worked for this type of fairy tale show. And her friendship with Kurt was excellent.

5. Becky

One of the more supporting characters on this list is Becky who’s one of my absolute favorites. Unlike Artie, another special needs person on the show, she is not a good person and that I found very interesting. As Sue’s henchman, she was badass, hilarious and consistently entertaining. Her constant insults provided comedy gold.

4. Kurt

Though I really dislike Blaine how bland and boring he is, I like Kurt and I wanted him to have a more interesting boyfriend. His coming out story was well handled, his entire arc from a timid to a confident man was so well realized and his interactions and relationships with everyone else are excellent. He’s an important, complex gay character who really works.

3. Santana

We simply never got enough of Brittany and Santana unfortunately. As the hotter part of this duo, Santana is also the bitchy one. Her entire arc with Kurt and Rachel was superb. She has a powerhouse lesbian relationship, she’s badass and she can throw insults like the best of them. I also really liked her granny subplot.

2. Brittany

Though I absolutely love Santana, I love Brittany even more. She’s the quirky part of this duo and by far the show’s weirdest, but delightfully so character. She was at first very dumb, but then she somehow became a scientist. Her good nature, naivety and charm are off the roof while her podcast provided many great comedic bits.

1. Sue Sylvester

It is simply impossible to make such a list without including the queen of insults herself – Sue Sylvester. She’s the gold standard when it comes to the show’s humor as she delivered basically three fourths of it throughout its run. She was used in just the right amount, but she shined particularly bright in the first and the last season. Her rivalry with Will was classic Glee stuff whereas her smart, carefully pronounced insults to almost everyone were to be heard. Sue is awesome, Jane Lynch’s performance is amazing and her presence was felt in every single scene.
