Catch as Cats Can (1947)
Catch as Cats Can Review
Catch as Cats Can is a 1947 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a solid, but not great film.
A Bing Crosby-like parrot is really annoyed by a Frank Sinatra-like scrawny bird so he employs Sylvester to kill the bird for him. I actually liked the two birds quite a bit. Yes, we’ve seen both of these singers before, but I liked seeing their rivalry emphasized and in particular the parrot was great and wonderfully evil.
But that emphasis on the birds made Sylvester look stupid, and not in a good way. He’s just a pawn here and not much else and I really dislike seeing such an iconic character used like this in a movie. He needs to only appear in his own movies with Tweety as this type of film with him doesn’t work nowhere near as well.
Catch as Cats Can features a solid premise, but Sylvester is used very poorly in this film.
