Halloween: Resurrection is a 2002 slasher film directed by Rick Rosenthal. It’s one very unnecessary, troublesome sequel.

Michael Myers’ derelict childhood home is used for a live internet horror show as Michael survived the events of the previous film and Laurie killed a paramedic instead of him. Needless to say, I absolutely despised that idea! I love H20 as it’s one of the best entries in the franchise and this film even manages to ruin that superior movie because it renders the plot of it entirely useless and that makes this film one of the most unnecessary sequels in the history of Hollywood.

That’s not to say that the movie is horrible and certainly not the worst entry in the series as there have been worse movies, at least in my opinion. This one features a fun reality show premise which is obviously very much a gimmick-induced approach, but it nonetheless worked in the third act which was hugely entertaining to watch and a guilty pleasure for me. But the rest of the movie is so bad, that that third act could not save it whatsoever.

The characters are absolutely terrible and the same goes for the actors playing them. Busta Rhymes as Freddie Harris is one of the most stereotypical black male characters I’ve seen and he’s more stupid than funny. All of the others are very forgettable and not worth discussing more.

As for Michael Myers himself, he’s weak. I did like that we got to see his house used as a plot device, but otherwise the kills themselves aren’t all that great and the movie isn’t scary or suspenseful at all. It needed much better horror elements for it to work.

Halloween: Resurrection is also very weakly directed by Rick Rosenthal along with weak acting performances, pacing and script. The dialogue is particularly poor which is the usual problem for this franchise. But just the fact that it came after the great H20 makes it even worse than it probably is.

Halloween: Resurrection is somewhat entertaining in its third act, but its online reality show premise is more of a gimmick than anything else and the kills themselves are very uninspired this time around. But the worst offence of this entry is that it renders the events of its great predecessor useless and thus it’s one of the most unnecessary sequels out there.

My Rating – 2.5
