Top Ten The Platters Songs

The Platters are such a good band whom I really admire despite their obvious flaws such as a tendency to rehash and publish already popular songs done before and mostly done better so I am certainly trying to avoid putting those on my list. But when they are great, they excelled at making the absolute classics of the fifties in songs that are catchy and memorable to this day. So here is my top ten list of their best songs with no honorable mentions this time around.

10. My Prayer

Although definitely less memorable and certainly less catchy than the other songs on this list, My Prayer still features sweet lyrics and a fine tune to it so it’s obvious when you hear it why it’s among the most respected of their songs, but a bit overrated to me personally.

9. Washed Ashore

A very modern-sounding and very catchy and fun rock and roll number, Washed Ashore is wonderfully sung and upbeat and entertaining throughout its short runtime as all of the band’s songs are quite short. It’s a shame that this one isn’t appreciated more as it’s quite underrated.

8. Sentimental Journey

This is a very well done number which I guess has already been done before, but this version of theirs is still powerful and beautifully sung per usual as the band has amazing vocals, especially from their lead singer who’s got the best pipes for sure.

7. The Magic Tough

Not the best or the catchiest of their songs, but it’s certainly up there as The Magic Touch is exceedingly catchy and difficult not to like. I personally like it, but then again I do not love it as the band has done catchier, but also more memorable numbers.

6. With This Ring

And by far the biggest and most pleasant surprise of the bunch was this number for me personally as it’s so damn good! With This Ring is surprisingly modern and cool in its sound and approach while being undeniably catchy in its chorus as well.

5. Glory of Love

Glory of Love is undoubtedly the most underrated piece that The Platters have ever produced. It goes without saying that the main reasons why I love this band are their catchy choruses, beautiful vocals and amazing back-up singing and this one has all three of those.

4. Twilight Time

The best of my newly discovered of their songs is Twilight Time which is a perfect accompaniment for the holidays as it’s that charming and enjoyable. It’s brisk and fun, but also sweet in vocals and very strong in its lyrics too.

3. Only You (And You Alone)

And now we come to their absolute classics – the three songs which I’ve loved for years now. The first of the three is Only You which is a more serious and calmer ballad, but it works because it’s undeniably iconic in its sound and tune while also being intriguingly dreamlike in its feel. It isn’t the most fun, but it’s one of their best and deepest numbers.

2. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

The first two songs are very close, way too close to call, but for now let’s say that Smoke Gets in Your Eyes gets the second placement on my list. I first learned about this song while watching ’45 Years’ and now I’ve listened to it countless times. This ballad is extremely beautiful and romantic while also being incredibly powerful in its amazing vocals and a spectacular chorus. We just don’t get this powerful sounding ballads anymore.

1. The Great Pretender

And yes, the number one is the obvious number one, but again it was close for me and it’s only for now maybe. But The Great Pretender’s status as a classic in music is unprecedented and very much deserved as it’s a song that is both very beautifully sung and highly catchy in tune, but also incredibly deep and highly relatable to me in its lyrics. It flies by how fun it is and it makes an impact in what it has to say. It’s definitely a classic of its genre and the best The Platters have to offer.
