Age of Sail (2018)
Age of Sail Review
Age of Sail is a 2018 animated short film that was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
It’s about an older man who is lonely and adrift at sea, but when he rescues a young girl, she later rescues him as well and the two successfully survive. This is a solid film with particularly good voice acting and historical feel to it. I also found its animation solid, though definitely not great. And the score is lovely.
The movie has its sweet sequences and I liked the relationship between the two characters, but ultimately nothing really deep came out of it as the movie is repetitive in its storyline and doesn’t really have any point to it or anything more meaningful to say. It’s a fine, well told story, but far from the depth that the filmmakers were obviously aspiring towards.
Age of Sail has strong characters, voice acting and score, but a repetitive nature to it and an apparent lack of depth.
