Top Ten ABBA Songs
ABBA is one of my favorite bands and a very misunderstood and underappreciated group in my opinion because they did not just make catchy pop tunes, but the later part of their career was filled with melancholic, sad and deep in lyrics songs. I appreciate both of those types and I am going to include both on my list of their ten best songs with a few honorable mentions.
10. SOS
Not the catchiest number for sure, but still one of the catchier tunes on this list is this underrated 1975 song which is very energetic, very pleasing and with a terrific, highly memorable refrain. It’s a standard ABBA song, but a good one nonetheless.
9. Waterloo
I personally find Waterloo rather overrated. Yes, it won the Eurovision Song Contest, but it’s far from the best songs that have won the contest in my book. It’s still a very good, very catchy and fun number, but just not as great as everyone says it is and certainly not in their top five.
8. Fernando
I did not care for Fernando at first, but I came to appreciate it more after witnessing Cher’s rendition of it in ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!’ It’s definitely a very moving song in lyrics and style while also being rather different from all the other songs on this list.
7. Chiquitita
This is another song with a Spanish title and a rather sweet title it is. It’s such a beautiful song with nice lyrics and meaning, but particularly a highly memorable, wonderfully sung refrain. It’s also another song that continues to grow on me throughout the years.
6. Why Did It Have to Be Me?
The male singers do not appear as much in their most classic and famous songs, but this one is an exception. It’s different in that way as it’s sung by both men and women of the group and it features terrific lyrics, great voices and a fantastic chorus.
5. Lay All Your Love on Me
This song is absolutely amazing and it’s only going to get higher in my future updates of this list as I am currently going crazy over it. It’s great particularly for its immensely catchy, highly authentic chorus and the song simply has a very modern, superb sound to it.

4. Mamma Mia
A classic which was even further established and immortalized in the titular movie, Mamma Mia is by far the fast and probably the catchiest ABBA number of them all. It never gets boring, it always lifts me up and it’s absolutely irresistible singing to it.
3. I Have a Dream
I Have a Dream is criminally underrated and I don’t know why it’s not on most top ten lists when it’s clearly one of their best. It’s the most beautiful ABBA number and the most moving. The lyrics are frequently beautiful, the chorus is terrific and the song is perfect for all dreamers out there.
2. The Winner Takes It All
The Winner Takes It All isn’t my favorite song and I don’t listen to it all that often because it isn’t as fun as some other songs here, but I undoubtedly have a huge respect for it because it’s the deepest, most personal and most heartbreaking song in their entire output as they dealt with breakup in their life during this time. It’s all the more powerful for it speaks their truth.
1. Dancing Queen
You cannot make an ABBA list where Dancing Queen isn’t number one. It’s simply not possible. The lyrics are iconic, the chorus is timeless and the entire song is beautiful, very catchy and a lot of classic, old-fashioned disco fun. It’s not only their best, but also one of the best pop songs of the seventies and also of all time. A classic for all eternity.
Honorable Mentions:
One of Us – This is another very strong entry from their more melancholic, later years. It’s an underrated number which features excellent singing and a very emotional feel to it.
Money, Money, Money – It can get annoying upon many a listening, but it still remains a fun song which is superficial, but undeniably entertaining in its lyrics.
Take a Chance on Me – This is also another song that isn’t as great when you listen to it too many times, but it’s still very well sung and with a memorable sound.
