A Tale of Two Kitties (1942)
A Tale of Two Kitties Review
A Tale of Two Kitties is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a phenomenal short.
Babbit and Catstello are two cats, one fat and the other skinny, obviously influenced by Abbot and Costello. They attempt to catch Tweety the bird to various failed results. Although that ending really infuriated me as they have used that yelling ending for so many times that it’s really tired by now, the film is otherwise so great and particularly strong in humor.
I loved Tweety here and his speech pattern that led to a lot of hilarious lines of dialogue. I also loved the fat cat and though both of them are great and an excellent duo, the fatty is particularly amusing and endearing even. The animation is strong, but the direction is top-notch as is the action execution. The film is so well paced and incredibly entertaining throughout.
A Tale of Two Kitties features phenomenal characterization along with an early great appearance from Tweety. It’s a well paced, superbly executed and funny Merry Melody that really works.
