Brave Little Tailor (1938)
Brave Little Tailor Review
Brave Little Tailor is a 1938 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a strong, famous entry.
It is the adaptation of the titular tale with a few differences here and there. So Mickey, after a misunderstanding, is tasked to go kill a giant by the king and save the village. He is reluctant at first, but eventually manages to subdue the giant. It’s a great tale well told here, but in my opinion the reduction from two to one giant hurt the film as that is my favorite part of the original fairy tale.
The film is superbly animated with an excellent color palette and so well designed giant himself. The score is also pretty good as is the action, though admittedly the humor is lighter this time around. The giant is memorable as are the king and Minnie, but it is Mickey who shines here in one of his most heroic, extensive roles. The pacing I found somewhat rushed though, and the film certainly needed a much longer runtime.
Brave Little Tailor isn’t as fantastic as its reputation suggests, but it’s still a pretty good, so well animated and mostly well adapted fairy tale.
