Pluto’s Judgement Day (1935)
Pluto’s Judgement Day Review
Pluto’s Judgement Day is a 1935 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a very good entry.
Mickey scolds Pluto for chasing a kitten and later in a dream Pluto has a nightmare where he goes to a hell ruled by cats. Eventually, he wakes up and starts treating a kitten respectfully. This is obviously one of those hell and heaven cartoons which were very popular during the 30s and 40s so it isn’t particularly original. Although very well made, I definitely found its premise familiar and the film also needed more humor.
But it’s so well crafted in terms of storytelling and animation that I ended up really liking it regardless. The ending is sweet and the beginning is also memorable, but the whole hell part is the highlight undoubtedly. That cat ruler who’s reminiscent to Honest John from ‘Pinocchio’ is a terrific, highly memorable creation. I found the film’s animation gorgeous and highly beautiful with this world being so well imagined too. Pluto is also fantastic in what is his first main role in the series.
Pluto’s Judgement Day has a familiar plot, but Pluto is great as the star plus the animation and world building are both terrific.
